Reflecting on the progress, growth, and incredible mahi that took place throughout 2024. It was a powerful reminder of what can happen when ākonga, kaiako, and whānau work together with purpose and belief.
Every learner at our kura made progress — some in leaps and bounds with curriculum expectations, and others through quiet, steady steps in their own learning pathways. Whether it was through strengthened reading skills, improved writing, or growing confidence with maths, every moment of progress was celebrated.
We are proud to share some of the key highlights from our 2024 learning data. Behind each number is a story of resilience, determination, and support.
Reading – More Confident Readers
Reading progress stood out as a real highlight:
At mid-year, 44% of our learners were reading at or above their expected level.
By the end of the year, that had increased to 54%.
Among ākonga not receiving additional learning support, this rose to over 60%.
Our Māori learners made fantastic progress — improving by over 10% in reading achievement by year’s end.
Many of our tamariki with diverse learning needs also showed meaningful growth through targeted, personalised support. Their achievements are deeply valued and celebrated by our team and their whānau.
Writing – Clearer, More Confident Communicators
Writing, often a more challenging area for learners, also showed strong gains:
From 46% mid-year to nearly 59% of learners writing at or above expectation.
Among those working within standard curriculum levels, this figure reached 63%.
Our Māori ākonga made similar gains, with more than 55% achieving at or above expectations in writing by the end of 2024.
And while writing continues to be a focus area for our school, the growth we saw in 2024 gives us great momentum heading into this year.
Maths – A Standout Success
Maths, especially in the Number and Algebra strand, saw the most significant progress:
From 55% of students meeting expectations in mid-2024 to nearly 70% by the end of the year.
For learners not receiving ongoing learning support, that increased to an incredible 79%.
Our Māori learners improved by 12.7%, and our NZ European learners by over 17%.
We’re especially proud of the decrease in the number of learners needing additional support — the gap is closing, and our systems for early intervention and targeted teaching are making a difference.
What This Means for 2025
The progress made in 2024 has given us a strong foundation to build on this year. We’ve entered 2025 with renewed focus, clear direction, and a belief that every learner can thrive.
We are already seeing early signs of progress in Term 1, and we can’t wait to see what the rest of the year brings.
Thank You, Whānau
To all our parents, caregivers, and whānau — thank you. Your belief in your tamariki, your support for our kaiako, and your partnership with our kura make all the difference.
Here at Putāruru Primary, we remain committed to helping every child shine in their own way.
Together, we thrive – Kotahitanga.
