Tu Meke Time

At Putāruru Primary School, Tū Meke Time is a special part of our weekly programme where ākonga across all year levels come together to build relationships, share experiences, and learn from one another. Rooted in the value of tuakana-teina, Tū Meke Time creates space for older and younger students to connect, collaborate, and celebrate the strengths they each bring.

This time is all about fostering a strong sense of whanaungatanga, belonging, and joy across our kura. While it originally began as part of our PC4L programme, Tū Meke Time has grown into a much-loved tradition that reflects the heart of our school culture

What is Tuakana–Teina?
Tuakana–teina is a traditional Māori concept that describes a relationship of support and learning between an older or more experienced person (the tuakana) and a younger or less experienced person (the teina).

In our kura, this means tamariki helping one another – whether it’s older students guiding younger ones, or peers sharing strengths in different areas. It’s a relationship built on whanaungatanga (connection), manaakitanga (care), and mutual respect.

Tuakana–teina isn’t just about age – it’s about creating a learning environment where everyone feels safe to learn, lead, and grow. It reflects the values of our school and the belief that we are stronger when we learn together.
